LuK now manages test data with pro_trieve: Test Data Management Solution from Sony and Kayser-Threde

  • pro_trieve now provides centralised platform for all data from internal test beds and mobile data acquisition systems
  • Success for S-AIT PetaSite in the automotive industry
  • Automated archiving process reduces risks and costs
  • Future-proof platform for the Information Lifecycle Management of test data
Kayser-Threde has implemented the test data management solution pro_trieve at the automotive supplier LuK. All data from LuK-internal test beds as well as data from mobile data acquisition systems at automotive OEMs is now archived automatically with pro_trieve. Up to 1000 authorised users can access the test data at any time, from different locations. Even the continually rising data volumes are catered for: the solution scales from initially 750 gigabytes to 108 terabytes and beyond.

LuK GmbH & Co. ensures the high quality standards of its products through extensive testing and verification which create increasing volumes of data. With pro_trieve, the time it takes to access test data and reports is significantly reduced, since storage media no longer have to be searched for and loaded manually. Additionally, the automatic capturing of metadata avoids having to enter descriptive information by hand. The platform- and format-independent and self-descriptive storage ensure that data can be found and read accessed for decades to come. “We decided for pro_trieve as this solution significantly reduces our administrative overhead and provides a user-friendly and future-proof handling of our test data. Additionally, the tremendous scalability protects our initial investment”, Thomas Pfund, Manager Test Bed Development at LuK points out.

As part of the implementation, mechanisms are deployed to migrate the entire set of 50,000 legacy data objects into pro_trieve.

The hardware provided by Kayser-Threde for the scalable solution consists of a Sony PetaSite S Series S60 tape library with an initial capacity of 30 terabytes – scalable to 1,500 terabytes – and four S-AIT1 drives. Due to the partitioning of the library and pro_trieve features, the solution is deployed with internal redundancy. All server-side application components and an Oracle 9.1 database run on three HP ProLiant servers, models DL380 and ML530 on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 8.

The S-AIT format provides the very high storage capacity of 500 GB per tape and a transfer rate of up to 30 MB per second (uncompressed). The storage medium consist of a single-real half inch cartridge, ensuring low integration costs. The R-MIC chip included in every medium contains the system protocol of every tape, a content index and user-defined data. This feature provides the drive with very fast access to any data on the tape. The S-AIT format is based on advanced helical-scan recording technology, renowned for its high data density, outstanding data transfer performance, as well as reliability and durability advantages. The use of helical-scan technology results in much higher areal recording densities than what is possible through existing linear recording products. And by utilizing the media length and cartridge size of linear products, the S-AIT format is able to store up to five times the capacity in the same space.
